Renee Hand

title

Clark County READS initiative promotes the importance of literacy and provides quality literacy programs to children and families in Clark County. Clark County READS is the literacy initiative of The Public Education Foundation, in partnership with Clark County, Clark County School District, and Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

Library Enhancement Program

Donations from Southern Nevada groups and corporations allow us to replace outdated books in school libraries with new nonfiction books. To date, 63,000 students in 70 schools have benefited from a total donation of more than 61,000 new nonfiction library books, worth $1,000,000.

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

Students in the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program are able to choose and keep three books as their own each year, while also participating in festive book-related activities designed to encourage reading. During the 2006-2007 school year, we served 37 schools! A Department of Education grant covers nearly 75% of book costs for the program, while a grant from the MGM-MIRAGE Voice Foundation covers much of the remaining costs.

Boots Up For Reading Book Club

Boots Up For Reading is a book club aimed at students in the third and fourth grades. Under the guidance of a classroom teacher, students gather before or after school to silently read books and then discuss the books with their peers.

Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a program that promotes early literacy by bringing new books and advice about the importance of reading aloud into the pediatric exam room. Doctors give new books to children at each well visit from 6 months of age to 5 years, and accompany these books with developmentally appropriate advice to parents about reading aloud with their child.

Reading Partner Program

We recruit and train adult volunteers to share the joy of books with struggling readers in elementary schools. Volunteers are trained in basic techniques to improve children’s fluency, comprehension, and enjoyment of books. Since the program’s inception in May 2001, we have trained over 1,700 volunteers and have placed them in 120 schools.

Book Re-Use Program

Through book drives at various locations we have collected more than 80,000 new and gently-used books for children ages 4-12. Books are sorted and distributed to teachers in the Clark County School District for use in their classrooms or to give away to their students.

Ruegy’s Readers

The newest program of The Public Education Foundation and Clark County READS, Ruegy’s Readers, encourages students to read more, to increase the utilization of school libraries, and to emphasize the significance of reading as a lifelong skill. This program donates books to school libraries in the names of students selected as

Ruegy’s Readers.
